Increasing numbers of people continue to be displaced around the world. Last year, for the first time since the end of World War II, the number of refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced people surpassed 50 million. In addition to processing some of the largest numbers of asylum claims in Europe over the past few years, Germany has also pledged to host 30,000 Syrians as part of a temporary humanitarian admission program. Germany thus plays a significant role in the EU and in the world in providing protection to asylum seekers and refugees, and should be commended for this.
