People are dying due to a lack of safe routes to Europe. It is particularly important that asylum seekers are able to apply for protection, the first step in which in the current EU system is their safe arrival in Europe. Without alternative routes, search and rescue operations are key to ensuring their protection; migrants have increasingly resorted to dangerous sea crossings because of the lack of alternatives. In order to more effectively address this issue, EU migration policies, and asylum policies in particular, must be revisited.
